INSTALLATION OF LOCAL ELECTRICAL PANEL AND ENCLOSURE

This article is written for electrical and instrument engineers for selection and installation of electrical panel, electrical cable and enclosure installation as per international standards.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT FOR ELECTRICAL PANEL INSTALLATION AND ENCLOSURE

Tools and equipment needed should be in good condition and must be checked by Instrument Supervisor prior to use. These includes but not limited to:

  • Set of Instrument Hand Tools and Fittings
  • Bending and Cutting Machine
  • Welding Machine
  • Chain Puller/ Chain block
  • Boom Truck
  • Crane
  • Hydraulic Pallet Jack
  • Common Hand Tools
  • Electric Power Tools (i.e. electric drill etc.)
  • Knock Out Puncher with Hydraulic Foot  Pump
  • Set of Termination Tools
  • Portable 120Vac, 60Hz Gasoline Powered  Generator
  • Pulse/Frequency Generator

All tools utilized in a classified area should be intrinsically safe and suitable for hazardous areas.

INSTALLATION OF LOCAL ELECTRICAL PANEL AND ENCLOSURE

Study and check possible route to be taken when bringing equipment to  its  final  location.  Verify the overhead clearances; turn radius and path are clear from any obstructions. Passage going through the building should be considered for easy access, considering maintenance during operation period.

Check the electrical panel locations and provide markings to which elevations, mounting height and orientations should conform in the latest issued IFC drawings, pertinent approved for construction drawings or Installation detail drawing prior for installation.

  • Structure Mounted electrical Panel installation shall be in accordance with the typical installation
  • On concrete foundation (by others) for electrical panel installation, chipping of concrete foundation, leveling, setting of base plates, and setting of mechanical anchor bolts prior to grouting, if required as per scope of
  • When miscellaneous foundation is needed, installation shall follow the typical drawing and finishing mortar for concrete foundation with sunlight resistant coating as per project
  • All supports shall be installed as per the approved  drawings.  Welding shall be done for supports wherever necessary.
  • All supports base plates, floor penetrations and electrical cable entries shall be checked for its location, measurements, level and overall measurements against the actual dimension of the
  • Sufficient access and working space shall be provided and maintained about enclosure housing electrical to permit ready and safe operation and maintenance of  such  equipment,  (NEC-  26).
  • Sensitive equipment shall be handled with caution to avoid undue stress or damage to the metal finished
  • Moving of equipment to its designated position shall be done in safely manner using hydraulic pallet jack, rollers or pipes.
  • Apply the concept of center of gravity for proper lifting of equipment to avoid unbalance weight within the package unit.
  • Vendor’s installation instructions shall always be reviewed together with the plans from time to time during the course of installation activities. Instruction shall be coordinated and duly approved for construction by EPC.
  • When equipment consists of number of electrical panels or sections, the assembly shall commence from the center section, while sections on either side shall be alternated, leveled and shimmed as
  • The complete assembly shall be checked to ensure alignment and level after tightening of bolts. Only the recommended bolting materials and torque values should be used in assembling the equipment. Vendor shall always be available in case query is necessary.
  • No welding works shall be made to the process equipment and steel structures. Use panelessary fixing materials such as unistrut channel bolted to the equipment using fabricated fittings as
  • Local electrical Panels and Enclosures shall be properly grounded in accordance with approved drawing, Instrument Grounding
  • After installation, electrical panels shall be opened up and inspected for cleanliness to ensure no foreign bodies are present. Dust and dirt shall be removed by using appropriate vacuum cleaner or rags. Protection cover shall be provided against damage during construction
  • Check the installed raceways and its access to suite the instrument electrical panels, enclosures and peripherals for the installation, ensuring a neat and proper installation as per Saudi Aramco or international standards.
  • Incoming and outgoing electrical cables for the instrument and electrical panels and its peripherals shall be sequentially arrange and identified to avoid confusions and minimize unnecessary movements within the set point. Sealing of electrical cable entry to electrical panels shall be in accordance with EPC COMPANY project specification.
  • Touch up paint shall be carried out to every damaged metal surface and edges caused by welding, grinding, drilling and cutting as per approved paint system and materials by EPC COMPANY.
  • QC inspection for the completed instrument and electrical panels, and peripherals installed and its steel supports shall be requested while inspection reports shall be filed and recorded in applielectrical cable forms as per approved SATIP and
  • Approved “Site Query” shall be available for any changes from IFC drawing.
