 This blog again we are writing for instrumentation question and answers for boiler of power plant. Befor we tried to cover all questions but some are pending so we are covering in this article.

Q.1. Which fuel is being used during Normally Operation of Boiler?

Answer. Fuel gas is used during Normal Operation of Boilers.

Q.2. What are the design temperature and pressure condition of Fuel gas at Boilers’ battery limit?

Answer. At Boilers’ battery limit Fuel gas is supplied at AMB temperature and 5.0 barg.

Q.3. How many CBD pumps are there?

Answer. Two pumps provided for Continuous Blow Down vessel.

Q.4. What is the type and model of boiler and who supplied this equipment?

Answer. Boiler at U&O is a Bi-drum, natural circulation, water tube packaged typed. Its model type is MY-N200 and supplied by Mitsubishi heavy Industries (MHI) Japan.

Q.5. Is it possible to fire Oil in boiler as a Fuel?

Answer. No it is allowed to fire Oil as a Fuel in Boiler because boiler is designed for gas firing only.

Q.6. Describe the feature which provide high ratio of furnace wall cooling in boiler?

Answer. Water cooled tube panels provide a variation of furnace cooling of furnace volume. The furnace is almost composed of water cooled tube panels.

Q.7. What is the benefit of High ratio of furnace wall cooling?

Answer. The high ratio of furnace wall cooling results in  Rapid and efficient heat absorption
 Reduced gas temperature entering the convection bank.

Q.8. How casing wall of boiler kept cool?

Answer. The furnace walls floor and roof consist of Fin-Welded tubes, backed by sufficient insulation to provide a cool casing wall.

Q.9. How high purity of steam achieved in Steam Drum?

Answer. High purity of steam is achieved by providing special internals inside steam drum.

Q.10. How IBD Drum bottom pumps P7014 A/B operation is being controlled?

Answer. IBD drum bottom pumps P-7014A/B operation controlled via Level switches.

Q.11. Which BFW pumps are turbines driven?

Answer. BFW pumps P-7102B & C and P-7103B & C are driven by Steam Turbine.

Q.12. Why deaerator effluent can be considered corrosion free?

Answer. Deaerator effluent may be considered Corrosion free because it’s free from O2 and CO2

Q.13. What are the two basic methods of Deaeration?

Answer. Two basic methods of Deaeration are Physical Deaeration and Chemical Deaeration.

Q.14. Describe the basic principle of Deaeration?

Answer. Two Physical laws provide the basic principles of deaeration.  Solubility of any gas in a liquid is directly proportional to the partial pressure of the gas above the liquid surface  Solubility of gas in liquid decrease as the temperature of the liquid rises

Q.15. What will happen if deaerator will be operated outside the design parameters?

Answer. Deaerator operation outside design parameters may cause Premature Failure

Q.16. What can go wrong if BFW pumps operated with No or Negative suction head?

Answer. Flashing and steam binding may occur in BFW pumps if operated with No or Negative suction head. Answer. Boiler can be operated on Ethane only once in 3 years.

Q.18. Why fins are there on economizer tubes?

Answer. Economizer has finned tubes for easy & better heat transfer.

Q.19. How many lancer guns are there in boiler?

Answer. Eight (8) Lancer guns are available in each fuel gas burner.

Q.20. How many boilers have FD fan with dual drivers?

Answer. Boiler A & B FD Fan can be operated with Motor & Turbine.

Q.21. What is height of boiler flue gas stack from ground?

Answer. Boiler Stack total height from ground level is 30m

Q.22. Which burner should be used during initial firing/start-up?

Answer. During start up initial firing should be from bottom burner

Q.23. What is the maximum rate of temperature increase for saturated steam?

Answer. During boiler start up the rate of temperature increase in the saturated steam should be limited to 55 C/hr

Q.24. When Steam drum level control is to be placed in auto mode?

Answer. Steam drum level control can be placed in auto mode with 1 element algorithm to modulate boiler feed water flow when the steam drum pressure reaches 2 barg.

Q.25. Which Blowdown is given once in a week as per Daily DutyRoaster?

Answer. IBD is given once per week for each Boiler.

Q.26. What should be the temperature of Boiler Stack and why?

Answer. Boilers stack temperature to be maintained always above the acid dew point. For 100% ethane firing the acid dew point is 113°C temperature.

Q.27. What is the pH specification of Boiler Continuous Blow Down water?

Answer. It should be between 9.5 – 10.5

Q.28. What is the Conductivity specification of Boiler CBD in μS/cm?

Answer. Less than 250 μS/cm

Q.29. What is the Silica specification of Boiler CBD in PPM?

Answer. Less than 1.0 ppm

Q.30. What is the Phosphate specification of Boiler Continuous Blow Down water in PPM?

Answer. Phosphate should be between 5.0 to 15.0 ppm.

Q.31. What is the Total Iron (Fe) specification of Boiler Continuous Blow Down water in PPM?

Answer. Less than 1.0 ppm

Q.32. What is the pH specification of Superheated Steam (HP team)?

Answer. HP Superheated Steam pH should be in between 8.2 to 9.2. Types of Process Diagrams
