Definitions Pressure Switches

For the purpose of understanding this standard, the following definitions apply.

Bellows.
A pressure sensing element of generally cylindrical shape whose walls contain deep convolutions, and for which the length changes when a pressure differential is applied.
Bourdon Tube.
A pressure sensing element consisting of a twisted or curved tube of noncircular cross section which tends to be straightened by the application of internal pressure.
Diaphragm.
A sensing element consisting of a thin, usually circular, plate which is deformed by pressure differential applied across the plate.
Explosion Proof Enclosure.
An enclosure that is capable of withstanding an explosion of gas or vapor within it and prevents the ignition of an explosive gas or vapor that may surround it.
Intrinsic Safety.
Design methodology for a circuit or an assembly of circuits in which any spark or thermal effect  produced under normal operating and specified fault conditions does not ignite explosive atmosphere.
Pressure Element.
A device that converts a pressure value into motion or movement.
Pressure Switch.
A device that activates or deactivates an electrical circuit when a preselected pressure is exceeded in a process vessel or piping system.

Pressure Switches Design Requirements in Process Industry

  • Pressure switch measuring element shall be Bourdon tube, bellows or diaphragm type depending upon the service and pressure.
  • Pressure element in process service shall be hardened Type 316 stainless steel, unless process fluid requires the use of other materials.
  • Connections for process pressure switches shall be 1/2 inch NPT male.
  • Electrical switch shall have a minimum contact rating of 115 volts ac/dc, 2 amperes. Any switch that initiates a  device, for example an inductive trip coil of a motor starter, shall have inductance contact rating suitable for that service.
  • Switch contacts shall be single pole double throw and hermetically sealed.
  • Actuation value shall be adjustable externally.
  • Reset shall be field adjustable and shall always be less than 10% of the set point value.
  • Pressure switch shall have terminals for the field cable connections. If flying lead type arrangement can not be  avoided, suitable external terminal (pull) box shall be provided.
  • Accuracy of pressure switch shall be atleast ± 0.5% of the set value unless otherwise indicated.
  • Pressure switches shall meet the requirements of NFPA 70.
  • Pressure switches shall have a NEMA 4X weather proof enclosure.
