METHOD STATEMENT FOR INSTALLATION OF JOINT SEALANT

1. Scope of Work

This method statement applies to the installation of joint sealant on expansion, contraction and isolation joints on concrete paving according to the Project Specification and Requirements of commercial buildings, plants and refinery projects.

3. Responsibility

1) Site Manager
The Site Manager shall be the over all in-charge of project work activity to be
completed.
He shall implement overall management to the project with respect to contractual
obligations, budget planning, resources procurement, construction, quality and safety
2) Safety Manager
The Safety Manager shall ensure that all necessary safety requirements are
adequately addressed before starting new activity. He shall review the construction
scope of the work and provide relevant Job Safety Analysis (SA) included in the
procedures of construction in compliance with OSHA regulations. He shall coordinate
with contractor and submit all documents necessary for equipment and valid
certificates of operators before working on site. He shall ensure that all new workers
have undergone safety awareness training.

The Construction Manager shall be responsible for the overall implementation and
monitoring of all the activities involved in sealing works, he shall be responsible for safe
and productive work culture. He shall be dealing with construction team for
implementing work in correct procedure at site.
4) QC Manager
The QC Manager shall be responsible to ensure, that all sealing works are in
accordance with the approved specification requirements of ARAMCO as well as the
implementation of quality control procedure.
5) QC Inspector
The QC inspector shall be responsible for the necessary inspections and tests to be
carried out for all the activities involved in sealing works.
6) Civil Supervisor
The Civil Supervisor shall be directly involved in the planning and execution of all
activities. He shall be directly involved in execution and preparation of the activities in
the sealing work and obtain PTW prior to the commencement of work and
Implementation.
7) Foreman
The Foreman shall be responsible for the direct execution of works according to the
plan and shall directly control and give instruction to the working personnel. He shall
also ensure that works are done with utmost care with regards to safety and quality.
Also follows up equipment, materials and tools required. He shall also be responsible for
keeping the materials on site properly protected and maintained in good condition. It is
his responsibility to oversee the proper use of personal protection equipment and good
housekeeping by his crew.

4. General

1) This instruction describes the steps to be taken and sequence of events necessary to
enable satisfactory completion of each activity.
2) All inspection requirements will be conducted.
3) All surrounding equipment on the perimeter of the work area to be sealed shall be
protected by means of barricade.
4) Expansion, contraction and isolation joints shall be sealed as specified in the standard drawing IFC VB-555105.000

5) Work permit shall be secured ahead of time.
6) Materials to be used have Material Approval and stored in acceptable storage
recommended by the vendor.

15. Work Procedure

1) Joint Preparation

a. The purpose of surface preparation is to remove dirt, dust and sand that had
been deposited in the dry joints by construction vehicles and runoff.
b. The filler board in the expansion or isolation joints will be cut to required depth
indicated on the IFC drawing.
c. Contraction joints will sawed as per required width and depth indicated on the
IFC drawing.
d. The joints will be water blasted by means of pressurized water spray gun and
blown dry with compressed air.

2) Backer Rod Installation

a. The rod is inserted into the joint uniformly to required depth without stretching or
tearing it.
b. Backer rod can be installed manually or by using small steel wheel mounted
handle
to roll the backer rod into place.

3) Sealant Application

a. Sealant shall be used in accordance with the manufacturer’s data sheet and
recommendation. SEE ATTACHED

16. Safety Control

1) Personal Protective Equipment (face shield, goggles, dust mask, ear plugs and
gloves) will be worn at all times.

2) Barricading of work areas of equipment shall be checked prior to start the work.
3) All equipment for works shall be inspected by JGC/DEC Safety Supervisor/ Officer
prior to start of work to ensure their worthiness of work.
4) All workers shall be prevented from trespassing into the barricade areas except
those who will execute the work. Extended working schedule shall be intimated in
advance, proper lighting arrangements, PPE, emergency vehicles and tools shall be
arranged with necessary safety personnel engaged in the working area.
5) Safety Supervisor JGC/DEC shall carry out the safety site inspections to ensure that
safety requirements laid out in Safety Action Plan are followed during the execution
of sealant applications.
6) Emergency exit point, assembly area, emergency evacuation plan and emergency
numbers shall be posted on the boards.
7) All personnel involved on the sealing works shall have to undergo Safety Training
conducted by JGC/DEC HSE.

7. Quality Control

1) The QC Inspectors of JGC/DEC and the ARAMCO PID Representative shall carry out the necessary tests and inspections respectively at various stages of sealing works.as per SA Standards.
2) A copy of Manufacturers Technical Data Sheet shall be available for verification to and Saudi ARAMCO before start to work.

8. Tools & Equipment

1) All tools and equipment shall be inspected by HSE department to ensure that the equipment is in good running condition. All damaged, unsafe or defective tools will be marked, tagged as Unsafe or with a Red Paint and shall remove from operation to assure that no one will use such tools on the job.
2). All tools and equipment e.g. hand and power tools etc. require special attention and Protection for their use and guidelines.
3) Electrical Tools and Equipment shall be used in accordance with GFCI requirement.
