This article is about Building Insulation Types, Materials, and Installation techniques used in building construction works.
Building Insulation Types, Materials, and Installation
Insulation Materials Types
- See drawings for specific insulation type to be used in building by design team. Insulation thickness and density required to meet required R value indicated on the drawings shall be supplied by design team.
- Insulating materials shall comply with requirements and with referenced international standards.
- Preformed units shall be sized to fit applications indicated and shall be selected from manufacturer’s standard thicknesses, widths, and lengths.
- Extruded-polystyrene board insulation shall comply with ASTM C 578, with maximum flame-spread and smoke-developed indices of 75 and 450 respectively. Thickness and density shall be selected to meet required R value shown on drawings. Combustion characteristic shall be in conformance with ASTM E 136.
- Cellular glass insulation shall comply with ASTM C 552 Type IV (board), and shall be faced on both sides with manufacturer’s special kraft-paper sheets laminated to glass block with asphalt.
- Unfaced, flexible glass-fiber board insulation shall comply with ASTM C 665, Type I with maximum flame-spread and smoke-developed indices of 25 and 50 respectively. Thickness and density shall be selected to meet required R value shown on drawings. Combustion characteristic shall be in conformance with ASTM E 136.
- Foil-faced, flexible glass-fiber board insulation shall comply with ASTM C 612, Type IA or ASTM C 553, Types I, II, and III and shall be faced on one side with foil-scrim-kraft vapor retarder. It shall have maximum flame-spread and smoke-developed indices of 25 and 50 respectively. Thickness and density shall be selected to meet required R value shown on drawings. Combustion characteristic shall be in conformance with ASTM E 136.
- Unfaced, glass-fiber board insulation shall conform to ASTM C 612, Type IA or Types IA and IB with maximum flame-spread and smoke-developed indices of 25 and 50 respectively. Thickness and density shall be selected to meet required R value shown on drawings. Combustion characteristic shall be in conformance with ASTM E 136.
- Foil-faced, glass-fiber board insulation shall conform to ASTM C 612, Type IA or Types IA and IB and shall be faced on one side with foil-scrim-kraft or foil-scrim-polyethylene vapor retarder. It shall have maximum flame-spread and smoke-developed indices of 25 and 50 respectively. Thickness and density shall be selected to meet required R value shown on drawings. Combustion characteristic shall be in conformance with ASTM E 136.
- Unfaced, slag-wool-/rock-wool-fiber board insulation shall conform to ASTM C 612, and shall have maximum flame-spread and smoke-developed indices of 15 and 0 respectively. Combustion characteristics shall be in conformance with ASTM E 136.
- Foil-faced, slag-wool-/rock-wool-fiber board insulation shall conform to ASTM C 612, and shall be faced on one side with foil-scrim-kraft or foil-scrim-polyethylene vapor retarder. It shall have maximum flame-spread and smoke-developed indices of 25 and 5 respectively. Combustion characteristics shall be in conformance with ASTM E 136.
Perimeter Fire-containment Systems
- Where indicated for gaps between the perimeter edge of fire-resistance-rated floor assemblies and walls, a perimeter fire-containment system using slag-wool-/rock-wool-fiber shall be provided, with the fire-rating indicated, as determined by testing identical systems in accordance with Underwriters’ Laboratories (UL) 2079 or another testing and inspecting agency acceptable to Company.
- Caulking compound to be used to seal the joint between slag-wool-/rock-wool-fiber insulation and the walls or floors, and shall be approved by the insulation manufacturer.
- Manufacturer-approved galvanized steel clips shall be used to hold insulation in place.
Insulation Fasteners
Insulation shall be attached by one of the following methods, and as recommended by insulation manufacturer:
- Adhesively Attached, Spindle-Type Anchors: Plate welded to projecting spindle; capable of holding insulation of thickness indicated securely in position indicated with self-locking washer in place; and complying with the following requirements:
- a. Plate: Perforated galvanized carbon-steel sheet, 0.762 mm thick by 50 mm square
- b. Spindle: Copper-coated, low carbon steel, fully annealed, 2.67 mm in diameter, with length to suit depth of insulation indicated
- Insulation-Retaining Washers: Self-locking washers formed from 0.41 mm thick galvanized steel sheet, with beveled edge for increased stiffness, sized as required to hold insulation securely in place, but not less than 38 mm square or in diameter.
- Anchor Adhesive: Product with demonstrated capability to bond insulation anchors securely to substrates indicated, without damaging insulation, fasteners, or substrates.
