How to Inspect Built-up Roofing
- Prior to installing final surfacing (gravel or pavers), the following leak test shall be performed:
- a. Three (3) days prior to the test, roofing contractor shall notify Company in writing when the test will be conducted.
- b. Roof shall be filled with a 50 mm depth of water on any part of the roof, which shall be maintained for 24 hours.
- c. Interior of the building shall be inspected for leaks that may occur during the test and after.
- d. Leaks, if any, shall be repaired, and the test repeated until no leakage is found.
- During roofing installation, Company will determine whether samples of in-place roofing shall be taken for laboratory analysis, in addition to manufacturer’s required samples. Testing shall be done at an independent laboratory, at roofing contractor’s expense.
- If Company requires test cuts, cuts shall be taken before flood coating and surfacing of built-up roofing membrane, at roofing contractor’s expense. Test specimens shall be removed to evaluate problems observed during quality-assurance inspections of roofing membrane as follows:
- a. Approximate quantities of components within roofing membrane shall be determined according to ASTM D 3617.
- b. Test specimens shall be examined for interply voids according to ASTM D 3617, and to comply with criteria established in NRCA Quality Control Guidelines for the Application of Built-up Roofing.
- Repair of test cut area shall be made immediately after the cut is made. Insulation of the same type as the original shall be replaced to the same level. Roofing shall overlap for 300 mm minimum around the cut. The same number of plies shall be mopped; the first ply shall extend at least 50 mm beyond the cut and shall be tied to the cleaned and prepared surface of adjoining felt. Succeeding plies of felt shall extend beyond underlying felt in a feathered fashion. The cut repair shall not be at forced level, but shall be in conformity to roof surfaces and may be slightly higher than the surrounding roofing.
- Roofing system manufacturer’s technical personnel shall inspect roofing installation on completion. Company shall be notified 48 hours in advance of date and time of inspection, and a report shall be submitted to Company.
- Where test results or inspections indicate that components of roofing system do not comply with specified requirements, they shall be repaired or removed and replaced.
- Additional testing and inspecting, at contractor’s expense, shall be performed to determine compliance of replaced or additional work with specified requirements.
