Data Center Installation Requirements

This article is about the minimum requirements about data center installation and what requirements need for electrical circuits, fire suppression system, air conditioning system installation in data center.

Data Center Installation

Complete isolation of Data Center from any source of dust, water, vibration and humidity. That includes:-

o Blocking any external open windows.
o Ensuring any water sources will not get into Data Center, utilities Room or UPS  Room.
o Ensuring there is no water or water-based systems are passing over Data Center, Communications Room or UPS Room that could leak into the center.
o It should not be located adjacent to water sources (e.g. WCs) or below or above fire sources (e.g. Kitchen).
o It should be 50cm-60cm raised from the floor and minimum weight should be 750kg/m².
o Data Center should be cooled through internal AC units. Building AC should not have any air flow to Data Center.

Raised Floor and tiles for Data Center

o Supply and install a sub-frame supported non-carpet anti-static raised floor in Data Center and related rooms. The raised floor should:-
o Safely capable of carrying the equipment weight including any future expansion. The load on the raised floor could reach 750 kg/m²
o A minimum height of 80cm of the raised floor.
o A minimum height of 2.8-3.0m from the raised floor to the ceiling.
o Perforated Tiles 1/5 th.

Electrical Requirements for Data Center

o All power circuits into Data Center shall be coming directly from main power switch with dedicated circuits. Power shall be coming into the UPSs and from there to the power outlets as stabilized power.

o Main power supplies to Data Center should come from two different sources to minimize power loss possibility.
o Auxiliary (Emergency) power generator capacity should cover all required power within Data Center.

o Minimum of (n+1) UPSs of enough capacity of KVA with power stabilizing capability should be powering systems. Each UPS should carry the load for 30 minutes.
o UPS should have emergency power-off controls for Data Center. The Emergency Power-off controls should be located next Data Center exit.

o Power outlets should be dual providing (110V and 220V) distributed at an average of four dual outlets per two square meters in Data Center. All outlets should include:

o Installed under the raised floor in a flexible conduits.
o Proper grounding.
o Circuits are as required and approved by IT Services.

o All outlets under the raised floor should be water-proof.
o Labeled with proper voltage indicated and circuit information and easily identified.
o Install dual power 110V/220V outlets on Data Center walls every one meter.

o All Power outlets in Data Center must have a stabilized power.
o Power load should be sized for hosted systems and future growth.
o One active and one passive pathways feeding the UPS from two different sources minimum 4kw/rack + the mechanical.
o Maintenance bypass Panel for UPS system should be connected from the MDB to the load in case of UPS maintenance or emergency.

Data Center Fire Suppression Systems

Installing a fire fighting system in Data Center, The fire fighting system shall meet the following criteria:

o Includes heat sensitivity and smoke detectors (HSSD).

o Safe to people and equipment.
o Environment friendly.
o Cost effective and its re-charge cost is low.
o Easy to re-charge and test.
o Covers all areas in Data Center. Unmanned areas.
o Prepare the Computer Center with Fires extinguishers suitable for electrical/electronic fire fighting.
o Early warning detection system.

Air Conditioning Requirements Data Center

Provide and install dedicated air conditioning units serving Data Center : The AC system shall be:

o Capable of controlling Data Center temperature and humidity.
o Need 100% redundant cooling system.

o Standby units in case of the presence of more than two cooling units should be discussed and approved by Data Center Management.
o Has no or very low vibration and noise.
o The air cooling in Data Center shall be directed under the raised floor.
o The AC Units should not share the power with any equipment in Data Center.

o The expected heat dissipation in Data Center should be calculated in BTU to cater for the maximum power load UPS would be designed for with future capacity growth.

o AC units should be located in a separate room adjacent to the Computer Room blowing the air under the raised floor.
