Plant Drawings Presentation Requirements | Engineering Contractor Design

General Requirements

  1. The presentation of all deliverables of the same type prepared by the ENGINEERING CONTRACTOR for the project shall be consistent.
  2. Drawings shall be sufficiently detailed to enable generating an accurate bill of materials directly. No design effort in the field shall be necessary for construction to proceed. The drawings shall support a lump sum fixed price or re-measured bill of quantities (time and materials) construction contract strategy as defined in the contract scope.
  3. All EC’s deliverables shall be prepared in English. Case-specific exceptions to this requirement may be allowed if all parties involved with the deliverables agree on which alternative language will be used. EPC Company must approve the language change before it is used in the deliverables.

Units of Measurement

SI (International System of Units or Systeme International) basic units (meter, kilogram, second) and derived units shall generally be used for all specifications, calculations, drawings, and other documentation. Clarification of project-specific requirements will be given in the contract scope that will be issued for each project. Refer to EPC Company standard 3GN00003 for details.

Drawing Numbering System

  1. The EC’s standard practice for drawing numbering may be used for referencing and controlling the deliverables that are created for the project. However, the ENGINEERING CONTRACTOR shall also add Air Products’ or the owner’s drawing numbers, as described in the contract scope, to all deliverables before they are released “Approved for Construction.”
  2. Note: Air Products’ numbering system is not project-specific. The entire drawing number format is DOCXXXXXXXXXX, where “DOC” stands for “DOCUMENT” and “XXXXXXXXXX” is the series number (for example, DOC0036570031). The series numbers may or may not be in sequential order. EPC Company will assign specific document numbers for the documents. They will be shown in the document register.

Title Block and Drawing Borders

  1. The contract scope will state project-specific requirements for title blocks that are to be placed on all deliverables. An EPC Company title block will be placed on each deliverable for most projects. When a third party owner is involved with a project, that owner’s title block may also be required.
  2. EPC Company will supply standard drawing borders electronically, if they are to be used on all drawings.
  3. If SmartPlant Instrumentation is a project requirement, EPC Company will supply a “seed” database and reference file for the ENGINEERING CONTRACTOR to use.

Plant North Arrow and Equipment Orientation

  1. All plan drawings shall have a plant north arrow located at the top of the drawing. Plant north is established on the facility arrangement drawing. It is preferred that the plant north arrow points toward the top of the drawing. If this is not possible, the arrow should point toward the right. North arrows shall all be in the same direction on all drawings for a given project and shall match the equipment arrangement.
  2. On equipment drawings, plan views shall be oriented with zero degrees aligned with plant north.

Revision Procedures

  1. EPC Company and the ENGINEERING CONTRACTOR may decide to collaborate on the development of particular engineering documents to share ideas and to find the best overall engineering solution to a problem. This collaboration will involve a short-term focus on a specific document or a small number of documents that have not been released, but for which both parties are sharing ideas by providing input to the same document(s). Therefore, it is not to be expected that changes to documents that are evolving under a process of collaboration can be controlled with revision numbers. It is essential that both parties are aware that associated or dependent work cannot proceed until the collaboration process has been completed and until the owner of the document has recorded its completion and formally released and transmitted it to the other party.
  2. Any deliverable released or transmitted by the ENGINEERING CONTRACTOR for any purpose, including review and approval by Air Products, shall be assigned a unique revision number for each release. All revisions shall be dated.
  3. Preliminary revisions and revisions issued for EPC Company review and comment or approval shall not be marked “Approved” by the EC. They shall be marked “PRELIMINARY.” The first time any such revision of a document is released or transmitted it shall be assigned the revision character “A.” Any subsequent preliminary revisions shall be assigned the revision characters B, C, D, etc.
  4. The first time that a document is released by the ENGINEERING CONTRACTOR for project use such as “for design” (by EPC Company or others), “for customer review and approval,” “for quotation,” “for purchase,” “for fabrication,” “for construction,” “for commissioning,” “for operation,” it and all subsequent revisions of the drawings shall include a note that states the release purpose. It shall include signatures of the approvers under the note.
  5. The first time a document is released or transmitted for project use, it shall be assigned the revision number 0 (zero). Subsequent released versions shall be assigned increasing revision numbers (i.e., 1, 2, 3, etc.).
  6. Changes made to deliverables shall be identified by labeling each significant change with the revision number inside a triangle (for example,2 highlight the changes.

Scale

The revised area shall be circled to

  1. All orthographic plans, elevations, and isometric views (not piping isometrics) shall be drawn to scale.
  2. Visual scale identification (a line segment and its equivalent in units of measure) shall be shown on each plan drawing.

Coordinates

  1. A consistent coordinate system shall be used throughout the entire plant design.
  2. Coordinates shall be used to locate major equipment on plan drawings.
  3. Coordinates shall be indicated in millimeters.
  4. Coordinates shall be used to locate interfaces and match lines between drawings.

9   Drawing Size

  1. Standard drawing sizes shall be the following or equivalent to these:
    • A0 – 841 mm x 1189 mm (33.1 in x 46.8 in) – old “E” equivalent (Do not use this size without approval.)
    • A1 – 594 mm x 841 mm (23.4 in x 33.1 in) – old “D” equivalent A2 – 420 mm x 594 mm (16.5 in x 23.4 in) – old “C” equivalent A3 – 297 mm x 420 mm (11.7 in x 16.5 in) – old “B” equivalent A4 – 210 mm x 297 mm (8.3 in x 11.7 in) – old “A” equivalent
  2. General arrangements, equipment arrangements, layout drawings, and key plans shall be A1-size. A0-size drawings shall not be used without EPC Company approval.
  3. Piping isometrics (including index sheets, weld attachments, and vessel trim) shall be A3-size.
  4. The size of other drawings such as charts, interconnections, schematics, and bills of materials shall be selected to suit the clear presentation of the information and shall be agreed to with EPC Company before work starts.

5  Material Substitution

  1. EPC Company will consider the substitution of alternative materials for the items specified in the contract if these substitutions do not adversely affect the safety, operability, reliability, maintainability, and/or constructability of the process plant.
  2. The ENGINEERING CONTRACTOR must identify any materials required by this specification that must be substituted in order to conform to local codes and requirements. Any substituted materials must be approved by EPC Company in writing.
