Welding Carobn Steel Plate and Pipe by SMAW Process

1. Scope

1.1 This article is about the requirements for welding carbon steel between 1 mm and 19 mm (1/16 in and 3/4 in) thick plate and pipe in all positions by Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) process using F No.

1, 2, 3, and 4 electrodes with either open butt or backing rings, to assure welds.

2. References

Reference is made in this standard to the International Standards.

3. General

3.1 Feather all tacks on full-penetration welds.

3.2 When qualifying welders for all positions, qualifications on pipe shall qualify for plate, but not vice versa, except that qualification on plate shall qualify for pipe over 63 cm (24 in) in diameter.

3.3 Adherence to applicable codes shall be mandatory. For ASME Code-approved work, the shop shall be ASME authorized, and the procedure shall be qualified for Code inspector approval at each site where it is to be used. Each welder doing ASME Code work shall also qualify for the inspector’s approval using the appropriate qualified procedure. The welder shall be a regular employee of that ASME authorized shop. For details refer to SES W11-F01.

3.4 Departures from this standard, for work not requiring ASME Code rules may be practiced as long as testing and inspection are adequate to prove that weld quality is not impaired.

4. Safety

Safe practices prescribed in SES W02-F01 shall be followed on plant sites.

5. Materials

Table I lists welding rods and sizes for carbon steel pipe in the vertical position. Table II lists welding rods and sizes for carbon steel plate in the vertical position.

6. Procedures Formats

The following formats are recommended to be used as a practice.

6.1 Vee Groove – Square. A-1. QW-482 Format for Welding Procedure Specification (WPS). See Appendix A.

6.2 Vee Groove – Square. A-1. QW-483 Format for Procedure Qualification Record (PQR). See Appendix B.

6.3 Vee Groove – Square. B-1. QW-482 Format for Welding Procedure Specification (WPS). See Appendix C.

6.4 Vee Groove – Square. B-1. QW-483 Format for Procedure Qualification Record (PQR). See Appendix D.

6.5 Vee – Square. C-1. QW-482 Format for Welding Procedure Specification (WPS). See Appendix E

6.6 Vee – Square. C-1. QW-483 Format for Procedure Qualification Record (PQR). See Appendix F.

6.7 Vee Groove – Square. D-1. QW-482 Format for Welding Procedure Specification (WPS). See Appendix G.

6.8 Vee Groove – Square. D-1. QW-483 Format for Procedure Qualification Record (PQR). See Appendix H.

7. Inspection

7.1 The amount and type of inspection required depends upon the service conditions and hazards to personnel and property. It is the responsibility of the originator to define the inspection requirements. Inspection shall be in accordance with applicable code(s).
