Instrument Wiring:

Ensure that all drawings, standards and applicable specifications are the latest revision including Fabrication and Erection Specification.

For systems up to and including 600 volts, terminal lugs shall be used for all stranded wire terminations. Locking insulated fork-indent type crimp lugs shall be used for # 8 and smaller wires terminating on terminal strips or under terminal screws.

When installing cable with in a transmitter, a slack loop should be made with in terminating area. Overall and individual shields shall be stripped back with in terminating area only as far as necessary (approx. 1½”) for cable termination.  Exposed shields should be rolled back, secured and taped to cable.

With in the DCS Panels, wiring may be terminated directly to the connector without a lug if the connectors will not accept lugs. Shields are to be grounded with in the DCS and insulated with clear heat shrink sleeves for their entire exposed length to prevent accidental contact with grounded surfaces or exposed portions of conductors.  The clear heat shrink sleeves should also be installed on shields in intermediate panels.

Terminations for solenoid valves and pigtailed devices require Nylon insulated quick connect crimp lug.

In the Thermocouple head, strip back shield and drain wire only as far as necessary for installation. The shield shall be secured with tape and the drain wire connected to the grounding screw by looping wire around the screw.

All instrumentation, thermocouple pairs, triad cables and wiring shall be labeled at their origin, at all intermediate terminal blocks, and at their termination with W.H. Brady Co. heat shrink, Brady Sleeve, or equivalent heat shrink sleeve type wire markers. The numbers and letters shall be typewritten and shall correspond with those shown on termination schedules or on contract drawings.
