Medium Voltage Testing Procedure on Reel

  • Perform a shield continuity tests on each power cable. Using a four-point, low-resistance ohmmeter, connect both C1 and P1 of the test set to one end of the cable shield.
  • Connect C1 and P1 of the test set to one end of the cable shield. Shielding shall exhibit continuity on values less than 10 ohms per 1000 ft. of cable.
  • Connect the C2 and P2 of the test set to the other end of the cable shield. Shielding shall exhibit continuity on values less than 10 ohms per1000ft. of cable.  (NETA ATS 2009,  Sec. 7.3.3.3.2.3)

NOTE: Observe the correct orientation for the current circuit (C2) and the potential circuit (P2) hook-ups at the opposite end (P2 connection closer to the specimen than C2).

  • Record Test Result: Test results are acceptable and in accordance with Saudi Aramco Engineering Standards and contractual requirements. (SAES-P-104, Sec. 13.6 and NETA ATS 2009, Sec. 5.4.1.5)
  • All ends under test shall be guarded from accidental contact as well as separation from all ends or elements not being subject to test.
  • Perform insulation-resistance testing from phase-to-ground and from phase-to-phase for each conductor and pair of conductors in accordance with cable and test instrument manufacturer recommendations.
  • Ground cable shields and conductors not being tested.
  • Connect megohmmeter between each phase-to-phase and each phase-to-ground.
  • Measure insulation resistance at one minute following the application of the test voltage.
  • Record the megohm values of each phase-to-ground and between each phase-to-phase, along with the description of the equipment, the voltage level, humidity, temperature, time, and the date of the test.
  • All conductors should be left grounded when not on test, during the testing of other conductors, until completely discharged of all DC potential.
  • If cable ends are exposed for testing, they shall be re-sealed (water and dust-proof seals) and firmly secured.
  • Test shall be performed using an Insulation Resistance Test Set (Megohmeter) 5000 V dc minimum.
  • Time measurement: For measurement of time, the instruments’ accuracy shall be ±1% or better. (Ref: IEC 60896-11, Sec. 12.4)
  • The test equipment calibration cycle shall not exceed twelve months.
