This article is about Special Work Procedure of Overhead Transmission & Distribution Cable Termination and Splicing for commercial buildings, plants and refinery projects as per international codes and standards.

Cable Termination and Splicing General Requirements

Overhead Cable splicing / termination procedures shall be submitted for review a minimum of 30 days prior to the start of the activity. These documents shall at a minimum contain the check points listed below.
The Personnel Qualification Procedure for Overhead Cable splicing / termination shall be submitted for review and approval a minimum of 30 days prior to the start of the activity. 
Personnel Qualification request for approval shall be submitted 30 days prior to the start of the work.
Design and installation of wiring and cable systems shall be in accordance with the NEC as supplemented by SAES-P-104.
The cable systems shall be in accordance with the regulated vendor list for equipment.
The manufacturers documentation for the Overhead Cable splicing / termination kit shall be reviewed for compatibility with standards and the cable being spliced / terminated. NEC 110.3B.
IFC drawings for the Overhead Cable installation, specification of cable, location of cable jointing and installation procedure for joints shall be submitted and reviewed. NEC 110.3B
The manufacturer’s recommended minimum bending radius of Overhead Cable to suit the installation shall be included. NEC 110.3B.
The Overhead Cable splicing / termination procedure shall include  requirements for environmental control including provisions for climate control, air conditioning, totally enclosed splicing enclosures, be free from dust and wind, and other requirements as indicated in manufacturer’s recommendation. NEC 110.3B.
Cables shall be permanently identified prior to the splicing/terminating process.

Overhead Transmission & Distribution Cable Termination and Splicing

The Overhead Cable splicing / termination procedure shall include requirements as indicated in manufacturer’s recommendation for support and fastening. NEC 110.3B
The Overhead Cable which will be spliced / terminated, shall comply with AEIC CS7 or AEIC CS6. 
The Vendor Installation Manual requirements shall be incorporated into the installation procedure. NEC 110.3B.
Compression (crimped) type connectors shall be used for splicing and terminating stranded conductors. 
Compression terminal connectors for 4/0 and larger conductors shall be two hole NEMA design.
All compression connectors shall have a manufacturer’s reference compression die number and conductor size printed or stamped on the connector.
Cable manufacturers bolt torqueing requirements shall be included with the procedure.
The Overhead Cable manufacturers recommended field test voltage shall be included in the procedure.
Overhead Cable terminations (operating at 2.4 kV and above) installed outdoors shall have a minimum creepage distance to ground of 40 mm per kV line-to-line nominal system voltage.
